Seed Cycling
Many women experience disrupted menstrual cycles, hormonal changes or fertility concerns. When looking at using food as medicine, this can be traced back thousands of years, however is becoming increasingly popular again due to the lack of essential nutrients in our diet. In order to understand how this works, first we must understand what a cycle is!
In a typical 28 day cycle, there is the follicular phase (lasting approx. 16 days), which overlaps with the period and ends with ovulation. In this phase there is a rise in estrogen to help mature follicles
and release the egg. This is ovulation, in which the egg is released. The luteal phase is then the time between ovulation and the next period, in which progesterone is produced to help to shed the uterine lining.
So what is ‘seed cycling’?
Seed cycling involves using four types of seeks during different phases of the menstrual cycle. In the follicular phase, one tablespoon of pumpkin seeds and 1 tablespoon of flax seeds are consumed for the first 2 weeks, or until ovulation. In the luteal phase, 1 tablespoon of sunflower seeds and 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds are consumed each day until your next bleed.
TIPS:
– Ground up the seeds into a fine meal, this is optimal for nutrient absorption
– Add your seeds into salads, pastas, curries, smoothies or other meals you enjoy!
